Defaulters risk a six-month imprisonment or a hundred thousand naira fine as Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has signed an Executive Order banning scavenging activities across the state.
According to a statement by Humwashi Wonosikou, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, effective August 14, 2024.
The order defines scavenging as rummaging through waste or engaging in activities that constitute a nuisance or health hazard. Violators will face arrest, prosecution, and penalties.
“This Executive Order serves as a strong warning to all scavengers and those who engage in such activities. The Adamawa State Government will not tolerate any actions that compromise the health, safety, and well-being of its citizens; violators will be dealt with swiftly and decisively. We urge all citizens to cooperate with the government in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.” The governor said.
The penalties include six months of imprisonment, a fine of N100,000, and both imprisonment and a fine.
Security agents are authorised to search and arrest offenders, while those who interfere with the order’s execution will be prosecuted under the Constitution and Adamawa State Penal Code Law.
Governor Fintiri warned that the government will not tolerate actions compromising citizens’ health, safety, and well-being and urged cooperation in maintaining a clean environment.
