The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, has joined the global community to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed annually on November 2.
In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim, and Secretary, Comrade Kissinger Bukar, the union expressed concern over the rising cases of harassment, intimidation, and violence against journalists in Nigeria and across the world.
“We call on government authorities, security agencies, and all stakeholders to protect journalists and ensure justice for those attacked in the line of duty,” the statement said.
The Council stressed that impunity for crimes against journalists undermines press freedom and weakens democracy, describing the day as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by media professionals in pursuit of truth and accountability.
“Ending impunity is not only about protecting journalists but also about defending the public’s right to information,” the statement added.
The NUJ Adamawa Council reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for the safety, welfare, and professional development of journalists, while urging practitioners to maintain ethical and responsible reporting standards.
It also called on media owners to provide safety training and support for reporters, especially those covering sensitive or conflict-prone areas.
“Justice for journalists is justice for all,” the Council concluded.
