The Nigerian Army has warned the public against fake social media accounts falsely claiming to represent or be linked to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

The warning was issued on Jan. 9, 2026, in a statement by Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, who said the Chief of Army Staff has no official social media presence on any platform.

She said the fake accounts are being used by scammers to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, solicit funds and spread misinformation in the name of the Nigerian Army.

“The public is advised not to engage, respond to, or share content from such accounts,” the statement said.

The Army said efforts are underway to identify and prosecute those behind the fake profiles, while reaffirming its commitment to national security and public safety.
