The Nigerian Army, through the Infantry Corps, has provided financial assistance to the families of deceased officers, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of its personnel.
This is contained in a statement issued by Captain Olusegun Abidoye, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Infantry Corps Centre.on Friday.
Major General Abdul Khalifah Ibrahim, Commander Infantry Corps (CIC), presented cheques to the next of kin of late Lieutenant Colonel TE Alari, late Captain BN Okereke, late Lieutenant MW Aderibigbe, and late Lieutenant NU Iya, at a solemn ceremony held at the Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre (HQ ICC).
“We understand the immense sacrifice these officers made,” General Ibrahim stated, expressing his deepest condolences on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and the entire infantry family.
“They were heroes, and their dedication to protecting our nation’s territorial integrity will never be forgotten. We are determined that their sacrifices will not be in vain, and we will continue to strive for peace and stability.”
The financial support stems from the Nigerian Army Infantry Officers’ Welfare Scheme (NAIOWS), designed to provide immediate succour to bereaved families.
General Ibrahim explained that the scheme, encompassing death, disability, and savings benefits, aims to alleviate the financial burden during the period before official army benefits are processed.
He acknowledged potential delays due to “service exigencies” and the complexities of notification procedures.
He emphasized the importance of active participation in the NAIOWS, stressing that only subscribing officers and their families would benefit.
“This scheme is a testament to our commitment to looking after our own,” General Ibrahim asserted.
“I urge all infantry officers to join and ensure their contributions are up to date.”
Furthermore, General Ibrahim revealed that the COAS had initiated a review of the NAIOWS, with a board tasked with recommending improvements.
He announced that future cheque presentations would be conducted at Divisional Headquarters, streamlining the process and reducing the travel burden on grieving families.
“We are constantly seeking ways to improve our support systems,” General Ibrahim stated.
“This decentralisation of the presentation process is a significant step towards ensuring timely and efficient assistance.”
The CIC commended the infantry officers for their unwavering dedication and professionalism, urging them to maintain their vigilance in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
The ceremony was attended by senior officers, including Brigadier General Aminu Umar, Commandant Warrant Officers’ Academy, and Brigadier General Abubakar Bello, Deputy Commandant Nigerian Army School of Infantry, underscoring the army’s collective commitment to honouring its fallen heroes and supporting their families.
