A 20-year-old man, Safiyanu Dalhatu, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly beating his mother to death with a pestle.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command.
According to the statement, the incident was reported on February 24, 2025, by members of the Peace and Security Committee in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi.
CSP Wakil explained that Dalhatu allegedly assaulted his 40-year-old mother, Salama Abdullahi, at their residence.
“Safiyanu Dalhatu is accused of attacking Salma Abdullahi with a heavy pestle, resulting in fractures to both of her hands and other bodily injuries,” stated CSP Wakil.
Upon receiving the report, police officers transported the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), where she was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“Initial investigations suggest that an altercation between the suspect and his mother led to the assault,” CSP Wakil said.
Dalhatu has been apprehended, and the pestle used in the incident has been recovered as evidence. The statement reads.
Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The suspect will be prosecuted in a court of law upon completion of the investigation,” CP Mohammed confirmed.
