The Benue State House of Assembly has removed Justice Maurice Ikpembese as Chief Judge and recommended the swearing-in of Justice Theresa Igoche, the next most senior judge, as acting Chief Judge.
The plenary session on Tuesday, presided over by Speaker Aondona Dajoh, became tense when Majority Leader Saater Tiseer read a letter from Governor Hyacinth Alia requesting the impeachment.
The letter accused Justice Ikpembese of abuse of office, tampering with the state local government election law, corruption, inciting judicial strike, bribery, and fraternising with politicians.
The Lawmakers were divided on the issue. Simon Gabo, representing Mata Constituency, drew the House’s attention to the “arbitrary removal” of Justice Ikpembese, but his concerns were not heeded.
A counterpoint of order was raised by Becky Orpin.
The Speaker put the issue to a vote, and 23 lawmakers voted for Justice Ikpembese’s removal.
The removal is reportedly connected to a court case involving candidates nominated under the Austin Agada-led All Progressives Congress (APC) who are challenging the local government officials elected under the APC faction loyal to Governor Alia.
