Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced the commencement of plastic exports from the state, describing it as a milestone in his administration’s drive toward economic independence and industrialisation.
Speaking during an inspection of the Borno Plastic Factory in the new Maiduguri Industrial Area on Thursday, Zulum said the products are already being sold to neighbouring countries, including Chad and Cameroon.
“I am happy to note that people from Borno will no longer need to import plastic materials,” Zulum said.
“You have seen that our products are already reaching neighbouring countries. We will continue to invest in industries so that soon, Borno will no longer rely on the Federation Account for its operations.”
The factory, which was originally built under former Governor Kashim Shettima, was revived under Zulum’s recovery and development plan.
To ensure its sustainability, it now operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with Tatabe Global Services managing production and marketing, while the government provides oversight and support.
Currently running at full capacity, the factory produces chairs, tables, basins, and other plastic items, creating hundreds of jobs for local residents.
Governor Zulum was accompanied on the inspection by the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, and other top government officials.
