Borno Commissioner Zuwaira Gambo Wins National Award at SWAN@60

The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Borno State, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, has been honoured with a National Award by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) as part of activities marking the Associationโ€™s 60th (Diamond) Anniversary.

The ceremony, held on Thursday, 31st October 2025, at the VIP Lodge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, celebrated six decades of excellence in sports reportage across Nigeria and the African continent.

Hon. Zuwaira Gambo emerged as the only female awardee from the Northeast, recognised for her remarkable efforts in youth engagement, support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), and promoting the participation of girls and women in sports.

The award citation described her as an exemplary leader who has demonstrated exceptional commitment, innovation, and service delivery under the leadership of Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, Executive Governor of Borno State.

According to SWAN, her dedication to empowering women and youth through sports has significantly contributed to fostering inclusion, resilience, and hope in communities recovering from conflict.

In her remarks during the presentation, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for his continued support and commitment to youth development through sports.

She noted that despite the challenges facing the state, the governor has continued to recognise sports as a powerful tool for engaging young people and promoting peace and cooperation among communities.

The event was graced by national and international sports figures, administrators, and athletesโ€”both serving and retiredโ€”who were recognised for their contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.
