Team Borno has qualified for the final match of the Zonal Teams Sports elimination for the National Sports Festival in Ogun State, after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Team Bauchi.
The match, held on Tuesday at the 27th August Stadium in Damaturu, drew a large crowd.
Team Bauchi took an early lead in the first half, scoring the only goal of the first 45 minutes. Despite numerous chances created by both sides, neither team could capitalize until the second half.
In the 64th minute, Bukar Wololo crossed the ball, and Abba Aji headed it into the net, to equalize Team Borno. Borno continued to dominate possession, showcasing impressive skills and creating several more scoring opportunities, but they were unable to convert.
The regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing a penalty shootout. Borno State goalkeeper Lawi saved the first penalty taken by Bauchi, while Usman Malika of Borno missed his attempt, sending the ball over the crossbar.
As the shootout progressed, Borno gained the advantage, with Lawi saving another Bauchi penalty and scoring his own.
Borno’s qualification for the final was further solidified when Team Taraba failed to participate in the tournament, resulting in a walkover win for Borno.
Their final opponent will be Team Yobe, who defeated Team Adamawa 4-0 in their opening match.
