Borno State is confident in its ability to emerge victorious at the upcoming Zonal Team Sports Elimination, according to Hajiya Amina Magga, Acting Executive Secretary of the Borno State Sports Council.
Originally scheduled for August 10โ15, the competition was postponed due to nationwide protests. The new date is yet to be announced by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Despite the delay, Magga expressed optimism to The Northeast Punchline Correspondent about the state’s preparedness.
She emphasised the unwavering support of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and the state’s Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports Development.
“All the needed support and encouragement are at hand from His Excellency Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Executive Governor of Borno, through the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports Development of the state.” Magga said
“Also, all the teams that are to participate in the Zonal Team Sports Elemination, which will take place in Taraba, are ready, just waiting for the new date.”
All participating teams, including football, basketball, handball, hockey, beach volleyball, and volleyball, are in top form and eagerly awaiting the competition, which will take place in Taraba State.
Innocent Michael Umoru, acting technical director of the Borno State Sports Council, reiterated Magga’s sentiments, stating that the athletes are in excellent physical condition and dedicated to training.
Borno State boasts a strong track record in youth sports, consistently winning medals at the National Youth Games in both team and individual events.
The state’s recent success is exemplified by the El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club, which received a N35.2 million naira reward from Governor Zulum for winning the Presidential Cup and securing a spot in the Nigeria Premier League.
The Zonal Team Sports Elimination serves as a qualifying round for the National Youth Games, mm for September 10, 2024, in Delta State.
