Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his appointment with immediate effect, citing critical health challenges.
The sudden departure comes less than four months after his appointment, leaving a significant void in the nation’s security architecture.
The resignation was officially confirmed on Monday, December 1, 2025, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), via a State House press release.
President Bola Tinubu immediately accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for the former Jigawa governor’s service.
“The President expressed his sincere gratitude for Abubakar’s dedicated service,” the statement read, “and we wish him a swift recovery to full health.”
The resignation takes place amid a crucial period for the country, coinciding with President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency.
The President is expected to soon elaborate on the scope of this new security roadmap.
The presidency has indicated that the search for a replacement is already underway.
The name of Badaru’s successor is expected to be transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation later this week.
Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as the Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023. He was officially appointed as a minister on August 21, 2023.
