Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was rocked by heavy explosions on Wednesday night as unconfirmed reports indicate that the armoury of Giwa Barracks was engulfed in fire.
The cause of the fire is currently uncertain, with possibilities including arson or extreme heat.
Residents reported hearing the first large explosions around 11:35 pm, and large flames were visible in the direction of the barracks following each explosion.
The exact cause of the explosions remains unconfirmed. It is unclear whether the incident involves an attack.
An eyewitness reported that firefighters had to evacuate the area due to the continuous explosions. Residents in the vicinity of the barracks are also reportedly leaving the area.
Efforts are underway to contact authorities to ascertain the cause of the incident and the status of insurgents being detained in the barracks.
