Nigerians are being warned to prepare for a sweltering few days as a surge in ambient temperatures, coupled with high humidity, threatens to bring widespread thermal discomfort.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress advisory, urging the public to take precautions to mitigate the potential health and productivity impacts.
“We are anticipating a significant rise in temperatures over the next three to four days,” a NiMet spokesperson stated on Monday, March 10, 2025.
“This, combined with elevated atmospheric moisture, will create conditions conducive to heat stress across a wide swath of the country.”
The most severely affected areas are expected to be the North-Central and Eastern states, including Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Cross River, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
However, the Southwest, coastal regions, and parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto states are also considered vulnerable.
“Exposure to excessive heat can lead to fatigue, irritability, and a decline in cognitive and motor functions,” the spokesperson warned. “It can also significantly impact productivity.”
NiMet has issued a series of preventative measures, urging the public to “brace for the burn” by:
- Using cooling devices to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
- Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing.
- Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Minimising time spent outdoors, particularly during peak sun hours (12:00 PM to 3:00 PM).
- Seeking shaded areas and taking regular breaks when working outside.
- Wearing protective accessories such as hats and sunglasses.
“We strongly advise the public to adhere to these precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses,” the spokesperson emphasised. “Stay informed and stay safe.”
NiMet encourages citizens to follow their social media channels (@NiMet) for real-time updates and further advisories. “We are committed to providing accurate and timely information to help the public navigate these challenging weather conditions,” the spokesperson concluded.
