Nigeria brace yourself! The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), along with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting at Monday 3rd June 2024.
This drastic action comes after failed negotiations with the federal government regarding two key issues: A new, higher national minimum wage, reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs
NLC President Joe Ajaero addressed the media at a press conference in Abuja, explaining the unions’ decision. He acknowledged the inconvenience the strike will cause but emphasized their unwavering commitment to fighting for better working conditions for Nigerian workers. NLC and TUC leaders pleaded for Nigerians’ understanding and support.
The NLC and TUC believe the current minimum wage is insufficient and doesn’t meet the basic needs of Nigerian workers, especially in the face of rising inflation. Additionally, they strongly oppose the recent increase in electricity tariffs, arguing that it places an unfair burden on households already struggling financially.
What Does This Mean for You?
An indefinite strike can significantly disrupt daily life. Depending on the level of participation, you might face closures or disruptions in various sectors, including:
* Transportation
* Public services
* Schools
* Businesses
It’s wise to stay informed and make preparations for potential disruptions in the coming days.
