The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported another attack on its power transmission infrastructure along the Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV line.
This time, vandals targeted and destroyed two recently rebuilt towers, T193 and T194.
The incident occurred around 10:15 pm on Tuesday, causing a power outage in Maiduguri and its environs.
TCN engineers initially suspected a technical fault after the 150MVA power transformer at Molai Substation tripped simultaneously with the transmission line supplying electricity from Damaturu.
However, a patrol conducted Wednesday morning with security personnel revealed that towers 193 and 194 were deliberately brought down using explosives.
This is the second attack on these specific towers, as they were previously destroyed in December 2023.
TCN is currently evaluating the situation to determine the most efficient course of action for temporary power restoration. They have also mobilized a contractor to rebuild the damaged towers.
The company emphasized its ongoing efforts, with the assistance of security agencies, to protect its transmission infrastructure. They appealed to the government and citizens for collaboration in safeguarding these critical national assets.
