Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), visited Zamfara State on March 6th, 2025, to express sincere regret and take responsibility for a recent airstrike that resulted in the deaths of local vigilante members.
This is contained in a statement from Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force.
During his visit, the Air Chief met with victims, their families, and Governor Dauda Lawal, reaffirming the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) commitment to protecting all Nigerians.
“This incident is a painful departure from our core mission of safeguarding the lives of our citizens,” Air Marshal Abubakar stated, expressing deep sorrow for the loss and suffering caused.
He provided a detailed account of the events leading to the strike, explaining that intelligence reports on January 11th, 2025, indicated the movement of suspected terrorists in the Dangebe Village area.
“Our surveillance confirmed armed motorcyclists, consistent with terrorist tactics in the region,” he explained.
“Regrettably, we later learnt that the strike may have mistakenly targeted local vigilantes returning from an operation.”
Following an investigation, the NAF confirmed that 11 vigilante members were unintentionally killed, and 11 others sustained injuries.
“We fully acknowledge the pain this incident has caused,” the CAS stated. “We do not take this situation lightly.”
To address the tragedy, the NAF has announced several measures, including financial support for the bereaved families, reconstruction of damaged buildings, and replacement of destroyed motorcycles. Additionally, a solar-powered borehole will be provided to Kambarawa Village.
Air Marshal Abubakar also highlighted the NAF’s Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (NAF CHMR-AP), designed to enhance operational precision and improve response mechanisms.
“This plan will refine our operational assessments and strengthen our capacity to mitigate civilian harm,” he stated.
Governor Lawal expressed gratitude for the CAS’s visit and the NAF’s commitment to accountability. “We appreciate your solidarity with the affected families,” he said.
He further presented the NAF with a Certificate of Occupancy for land near Gusau airport, designated for a new Air Force Base. 2
The visit underscores the NAF’s commitment to transparency and community engagement, as it works to restore trust and improve its operations.
