COAS Visits Shehu of Borno, Vows Improved Troop Welfare, Administration

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday evening paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi (CFR, FNSE), at his palace in Maiduguri.

The visit, held on November 6, 2025, was confirmed in a statement by Hon. Kunduri Ali, Chief Press Media Aide to the Shehu of Borno.

General Shaibu, accompanied by senior military officers, expressed appreciation to the royal father for his continuous support of the Nigerian Army and the people of Borno during years of insurgency and recovery.

โ€œThe Shehuโ€™s guidance and fatherly role have remained instrumental to peace efforts in the Northeast,โ€ the army chief said. 

โ€œWe came to pay homage and to appreciate his tireless sacrifices and commitment to his people.โ€

During the visit, the COAS presented an award of honour to the Shehu in recognition of his leadership and contributions to peacebuilding and community stability in Borno State.

Speaking later at Maimalari Cantonment, General Shaibu reiterated his commitment to improving soldiersโ€™ welfare and upholding fairness within the army.

โ€œWe will ensure that the right people are placed in the right positions,โ€ he said.

โ€œEvery soldier will get what is due to him, and we will continue to strengthen morale through timely payment of allowances and family support initiatives.โ€

He emphasised that troop motivation and welfare remain key priorities under his leadership, promising to sustain and expand the โ€œsoldier-firstโ€ policy introduced by his predecessor.

The Shehu, joined by the Waziri of Borno, kingmakers, district heads, and members of the Emirate Council, commended the Army Chief for his dedication to national security and his continued service to the people of Borno State.
