The incident occurred on March 28, 2025, when a mob killed 16 local hunters, mistakenly believed to be kidnappers.

The travellers were intercepted by local security personnel, who discovered homemade weapons in their vehicle. This discovery triggered a violent mob attack, resulting in the victims being beaten and set ablaze.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the killings and ordered a full investigation and the arrest of those responsible. Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who visited the victims’ families, had previously announced the arrest of 14 suspects, who were to be moved to Abuja.
