The Federal Government has officially declared the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, marking a significant boost to the region’s aviation landscape.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement during the inaugural commercial flight ceremony at the Minna airport.
He cited the airport’s superior facilities, including its runway and proximity to Abuja, as key factors in the decision.
“It remains a puzzle that this airport has been underutilised despite having all the international facilities,” Keyamo stated.
He directed all relevant agencies to collaborate and ensure seamless passenger processing in Minna during any disruptions at NAIA.
Keyamo also lauded Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for his “political will”, stating, “He has squeezed water out of stone, and this is the beginning of many great things.” He pledged continued federal support for the state’s aeronautical endeavours.
Governor Bago, expressing his delight, attributed the achievement to collective effort and described it as “historic”. He acknowledged the fulfilment of a long-held vision by former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, and others.
“The proclamation of the Federal Government is a fulfilment of a long-time vision,” he stated. He also assured the continuation of the partnership with Overland Airways, the commercial flight operator.
The governor further announced plans for additional projects around the airport, underscoring his administration’s commitment to aviation development. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support.
Overland Airways Managing Director, Capt. Edward Boyo, acknowledged President Tinubu’s contributions to the aviation industry and praised Governor Bago’s efforts in facilitating the flight operations.
He emphasised the potential for Minna to become a hub for trade, investment, agriculture, and other economic activities.
Other dignitaries, including Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Abdullahi Idris Garba (represented by Abubakar Yahaya Kusada), Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Abdullahi Sabi Aliyu, and Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, lauded the development as an opportunity for economic revitalisation.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the Minna airport as “the best in the Federation in terms of aeronautic facilities,” highlighting the successful collaboration between the state and federal governments.
Former Niger State Governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, encouraged Governor Bago to persevere in his development efforts and assured him of continued support.
The governor led the dignitaries on an inspection of the newly constructed Hajj Terminal. It was noted that commercial flights last operated in Minna during Dr Aliyu’s tenure (2007-2015) but were not sustained.
