The recent bridge collapse at Buskuri along the Potiskum-Kano highway has triggered a flash flood, affecting communities along the River Jama’are and Komodugu tributaries in Yobe State.
According to the Yobe state emergency management agency SEMA, as of August 11, 2024, the disaster has impacted 386 households, comprising 1,076 individuals, and 765 mud shelter facilities, including a mosque, across 16 communities in 5 local government areas, namely Bursari, Jakusko, Potiskum, Yusufari, and Machina.
Additionally, extensive farmland along riverine locations has been affected.
Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed Yobe SEMA to prioritise victim safety and protection, especially during this economic hardship.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant for heavy rainfall, windstorms, and disease outbreaks and to stockpile food and hygiene items.
They are also urged to monitor changing weather conditions closely and stay informed to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
SEMA says it is working closely with NEMA Northeast to ensure timely response activation, while LEMC is advising on evacuation from high-risk areas.
