Former President Shagari’s Last Surviving Wife, Hajiya Saratu, Dies at 89

The family of Nigeria’s former president, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, has announced the passing of his last surviving wife, Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari, who died on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the age of 89.

The announcement was contained in a statement released by the former president’s eldest son and Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, Captain Mohammed Bala Shagari (rtd), on Monday.

According to the statement, Hajiya Saratu passed away peacefully around 3:00 p.m. after a prolonged illness.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the family said.

Captain Shagari described his late mother as “a woman of grace, humility, and quiet strength who lived a life of dignity and devotion to family and faith.”

He added that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Hajiya Saratu was known for her modest lifestyle and unwavering support for her husband throughout his long and distinguished public service career.

The late President Shagari, who served as Nigeria’s first executive president from 1979 to 1983, died in December 2018.
