Gombe Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Forestry on International Forests Day

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to environmental protection and sustainable natural resource management, joining the global community in commemorating the 2025 International Day of Forests.

Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director-General of Press Affairs, Government House, Gombe, has released a statement stating that Governor Yahaya emphasised the vital role forests play in mitigating climate change, combating desertification, and preserving biodiversity.

He highlighted the 2025 theme, “Forests and Food”, stressing the crucial link between forests, food security, nutrition, and livelihoods.

“We recognise the indispensable role forests play in regulating climate, preventing soil erosion, and sustaining livelihoods,” Governor Yahaya stated.

“Protecting our natural resources is not just an environmental obligation but a necessity for securing the future of Gombe State.”

The Governor assured that his administration will remain steadfast in its commitment to forest conservation, afforestation, and climate resilience, pledging collaboration with development partners, environmental agencies, and community stakeholders.

“As we mark this year’s International Day of Forests, I call on all stakeholders – traditional institutions, civil society, and every citizen – to take ownership of our environment,” he urged.

“Let us protect our forests, plant more trees, and promote sustainable land-use practices for the benefit of present and future generations.”

Governor Yahaya highlighted his administration’s 10-year development plan, “Devagom,” which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and showcased the state’s “Green Governor” initiatives.

The Gombe Goes Green (3G) Initiative, launched in 2020, has successfully reversed environmental degradation and created employment opportunities, planting over four million trees across the state.

“Through the 3G initiative, we have made significant strides in afforestation and land restoration,” Governor Yahaya noted.

The administration has also prioritised tree planting in areas prone to gully erosion, including the Gombe State University – Malam Inna Gully Erosion Control Project, the FCE – Unguwa Uku Gully Erosion Control Project, and the ongoing Shehu Abubakar District – Commissioner of Police Residence Gully Erosion Control Project.

Furthermore, Governor Yahaya has taken decisive steps to protect the state’s forest reserves, including the ongoing fencing and rehabilitation of the Kanawa Forest Reserve.

He has also initiated the resurvey, remapping, and redemarcation of gazetted grazing reserves.

“We are committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our forest resources,” Governor Yahaya affirmed.
