The Gombe State Government, in response to a recent meningitis outbreak in Nafada Local Government Area, llaunched a vaccination campaign on Monday.
The state Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau, representing Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, flagged-off the campaign at the Emir’s Palace in Nafada.
The initiative emphasizes the government’s commitment to public health and aims to curb the spread of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM).
Health officials detected a rise in CSM cases in Nafada earlier this year. By February 28th, 2024, over 300 suspected cases were reported, with 26 fatalities. The outbreak spread to neighboring areas.
Deputy Governor Jatau acknowledged the crucial role of donor agencies and traditional leaders in the fight against meningitis. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring everyone has access to lifesaving vaccines.
Jatau also appealed to the public to prioritize medical attention over unfounded rumors and avoid politicizing health issues.
The vaccination campaign targets individuals between the ages of one and twenty-nine, excluding pregnant women. Health officials encouraged parents and guardians to bring their children forward for vaccination.
Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) commended the state government’s efforts and pledged their continued support for quality healthcare in Gombe.
Nafada Local Government Chairman, Alh. Babangida Adamu Jigawa, welcomed the initiative and called on the community to actively participate in the vaccination exercise.
The Emir of Nafada, Alh. Muhammadu Dadum Hamza, also expressed his appreciation for the government’s swift response and urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow health guidelines.
The Deputy Governor, Emir, Local Government Chairman, and Head of Civil Service marked the event’s highlight by receiving the first doses of the CSM vaccine.
