In a decisive response to the recent devastating floods that have ravaged communities across the state affecting approximately 11, 999 household with 29 deaths and 274 persons sustaining injuries from across 323 communities (from the 15th of April to 19th August 2024) with Nguru, Karasuwa, and Nangere local government areas as worse hit LGAs.
The Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON (Chiroman Gujba), has announced a comprehensive relief package totaling N100 million.
The governor, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana (Wazirin Fune), made this commitment during a visit to the affected areas on August 19, 2024, aiming to alleviate the suffering of the over 1,000 households displaced by the disaster.
The governor not only donated N100,000,000:00 million in relief funds to support flood victims but also assured the community of a determined commitment to finding a lasting solution to the recurring flood challenges.”
Governor Buni’s delegation, which included the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Baba Malum Wali, Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly Hon. Ya’u Usman Dachia, Environment Commissioner Hon. Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, Hon Commisioner of Works, Member rep Nguru and Bade in the state HoA Hon. Lawan Sani I Nguru, ES SEMA Dr. Mohammed Goje, Chairmen of the 3 LGAs and other key senior Government officials, visited several flood-stricken communities to assess the damage and commiserated with victims.
The relief fund allocation includes N50 million for Nguru, N30 million for Karasuwa, and N20 million for Nangere. The cash will ensure those in Camps have funds to rent temporary shelter atleast for 6 months while Government is intensifying efforts to reintegrate them back.
In addition to the financial support, the state government is providing essential food and non-food items to the affected families, with directives issued to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure swift distribution.
During his visit to Nguru, the Deputy Governor paid a courtesy call to the Emir of Nguru, Alhaji Mustapha Ibn Galadima Mai Kyari. The Emir expressed his gratitude to the state government for its prompt response, while also appealing for a lasting solution to the recurrent flooding in the region. The Deputy Governor assured the Emir that the government is committed to addressing the root causes of the flooding, including the construction of reservoirs and earth dams and also channel the water ways out of the town, he said already consultants are submitting findings in September and work will commence thereafter to control water flow and support irrigation and fish farming.
In Karasuwa, the Deputy Governor met with victims at the Jaji Maji camp, where he distributed N30 million in relief funds and reiterated the government’s commitment to sustained support for the affected communities.
Similarly, in Nangere, the Deputy Governor visited the palace of His Excellency Mai Tikau, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Muhammad Grema, and promised N20 million in aid. He also assured residents that the government would construct a dam in Kanda to prevent future flooding and enhance agricultural activities in the area.
Governor Buni’s administration has pledged to continue its efforts to protect the lives and property of Yobe State’s citizens, including the repair of the old Nangere road and the construction of drainage systems to mitigate flood risks in the future. The Emir of Tikau, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Muhammad Grema, commended the government for its swift action and expressed his hope for peace and prosperity across the state.
This decisive intervention by Governor Buni underscores the Yobe State Government’s commitment to providing immediate relief to flood victims while also seeking long-term solutions to prevent future disastersthus demonstrating a profound commitment to aiding those in need during this critical time.
