Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has declared digital literacy essential for the state’s future, reiterating his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through digital education.
This is contained in a statement issued by Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Government House, Dutse.
The governor made the remarks Tuesday while hosting a delegation from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Peace Institute at Government House, Dutse.
The visit, led by Professor Hauwa Ibrahim, USA, also included international student volunteers from Harvard University, who are training local primary and secondary school students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
“Digital literacy is no longer optional. It is essential,” Governor Namadi said, noting the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and Jigawa’s own development priorities.
He assured the delegation of the state’s readiness to “own, sustain, and expand” the program.
“We will study the curriculum you brought. From what Iโve seen, it is exactly what we needโblending digital education with discipline, values, and culture,” Namadi added.
The governor highlighted existing state efforts, including training nearly 20,000 teachers in digital literacy and implementing digital platforms for learning delivery.
“Your program aligns perfectly with our existing reformsโand adds immense value,” he stated.
Dr. Ahmed Tambuwal, Acting Director of Digital Literacy at NITDA, emphasised the national vision. He explained that NITDA aims to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027 as part of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” to diversify Nigeria’s economy through technology.
Professor Hauwa Ibrahim of the Peace Institute stressed the program’s focus on empowerment through simplicity.
“This initiative is not just about STEAM. Itโs about showing children that they can be anythingโdo anything,” she said, noting the volunteers are teaching robotics and coding basics in an engaging way.
