Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has expressed deep sadness following a tragic incident in Billiri where an Easter procession was struck by a trailer truck, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to several others on Monday.

A trailer truck, reportedly suffering brake failure, veered into a group of Christian worshippers, tragically claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving several others injured.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, visibly moved by the tragedy, issued a statement expressing his profound sorrow and concern.

“This is a dark and painful moment for the families affected and for all of us as a people,” the governor lamented.

Eyewitness accounts detail the horrific moment when the truck, laden with grains and en route from Adamawa State to Gombe, lost control and crashed into the procession of Christian faithful who were marking the Easter celebration.

The scene was described as chaotic, with first responders and community members rushing to aid the injured.

Governor Yahaya extended his deepest sympathies to those affected, stating, “On behalf of the Government and people of Gombe State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the swift and full recovery of those currently receiving treatment.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Christian community in Billiri and beyond, as well as with all those affected by this terrible tragedy.” He further assured that,

“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that the victims receive the best possible medical care.”

In a strong stance on accountability, Governor Yahaya has directed relevant authorities to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.

He vowed that justice will be served, stating unequivocally, “We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and decisive action will be taken against anyone found wanting in this incident. The safety and well-being of our citizens remain our top priority.”

Amidst the grief and shock, the governor called for calm and unity within the state. “While we mourn, I call on all residents of Billiri and the entire state to remain calm and law-abiding. We must resist the temptation to allow grief and anger to lead us into actions that could further endanger lives or disrupt the peace we have worked so hard to build.”

He added that security agencies have been instructed “to maintain law and order and to engage with community leaders to promote peace and mutual understanding at this critical time.”

Drawing on the state’s reputation for harmony, Governor Yahaya expressed confidence in the resilience of the people of Gombe.

“The governor noted that Gombe State is renowned for its harmony and spirit of tolerance, expressing confidence that, as a people, โ€˜we will overcome this tragedy through compassion, understanding, and a sense of unity.โ€™”

The investigation into the incident is expected to proceed swiftly, with authorities yet to release further details on the cause of the brake failure or potential culpability.

The state remains in mourning as families grapple with the loss of their loved ones and the injured continue to receive medical attention.
