A coalition of prominent Nigerians under the banner of Concerned Nigerian Citizens has urged the United States to withdraw its recent threats against Nigeria, warning that foreign interference could worsen insecurity and national divisions.
The group made the call in a joint statement issued in Kaduna on Wednesday by Dr. Bilkisu Oniyangi, Prof. Usman Yusuf, Dr. Ahmed Shehu, Dr. Aliyu Tilde, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, and Barr. Kalli Ghazali.
The statement followed recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested relisting Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and hinted at possible military action to “protect Nigerian Christians.”
“Threats, insults, and opportunistic postures will not help our situation,” the group said.
“This is our problem as Nigerians, and it will be solved by us.”
They warned that the U.S. posture could deepen Nigeria’s fault lines and turn the country into a pawn in global geopolitics.
“We see value in friendly nations urging us to protect our citizens, but we will not tolerate foreign interference under any circumstance,” the statement added.
The group acknowledged the role of global partners such as the U.S., U.K., China, and Russia but emphasized that Nigeria must lead its own recovery.
They urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address Nigerians directly on the issue and prioritize security reforms over foreign visits.
“The President should reassure Nigerians that the government is on top of the situation and appoint competent Heads of Missions to defend our interests globally,” they stated.
The coalition appealed for unity across religious and regional divides, calling on citizens to stop framing insecurity along faith lines.
“Every life taken, every kidnapping or assault matters equally. Those who kill us do not care about our faiths,” they stressed.
In their recommendations, the group asked the U.S. to withdraw all threats, assist Nigeria with strategic support, and mobilize global partners to prevent instability in the Sahel region.
They concluded with optimism, expressing faith that Nigeria would overcome its challenges through sincere leadership, political will, and unity.
“Our independence and unity have been tested many times, and this too shall pass, but only if we act together as one people,” the statement read.
