IGP Pledges Support for Press Freedom, Forges Alliance with VON Against Misinformation

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s staunch dedication to press freedom and the protection of civic space, following a pivotal meeting with Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, Director-General (DG) of the Voice of Nigeria (VON).

The visit, held at the Force Headquarters, underscores the vital synergy between law enforcement and media in fostering transparency and accountability within a democratic framework.

“This meeting marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the media,” stated police spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

During the courtesy visit, the VON DG lauded IGP Egbetokun’s leadership and commended the Force’s proactive initiatives since his assumption of office.

“The DG highlighted the crucial role the police play in upholding public safety and order,” the spokesperson relayed.

“He also expressed strong support for the IGP’s commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of disinformation and misinformation, which can severely damage public perception of the NPF and the nation.”

In response, IGP Egbetokun conveyed his appreciation to VON for recognising the NPF’s indispensable role in safeguarding citizens’ lives and property.

“We are grateful for VON’s offer to utilise its platform to promote a positive narrative of the Force and to assist in combating the spread of fake news,” the IGP stated.

“This partnership is invaluable in our efforts to maintain public trust.”

The IGP underscored the NPF’s unwavering commitment to serving the Nigerian people with integrity and professionalism.

“Our collaboration with VON will be instrumental in countering the detrimental effects of misinformation and ensuring a more informed and secure society,” the spokesperson concluded.
