IGP Reaffirms Ban on Public Parade of Suspects, Citing Human Rights

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s ban on the public parade of suspects, emphasising the protection of fundamental human rights and adherence to international policing standards.

This is contained in a statement issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

“This directive, which has been previously communicated, is a vital part of our modernisation efforts,” stated the police spokesperson.

“It reflects our commitment to respecting the fundamental rights of all individuals, including those suspected of criminal activity.”

The IGP’s reaffirmation of the ban, announced on March 11th, 2025, aims to ensure that suspects are not publicly paraded before formal charges are filed in a court of law.

“This policy is aligned with international human rights standards, which prioritise the protection and preservation of the dignity and rights of individuals throughout the judicial process,” ACP Adejobi added.

The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to operating within the bounds of the law and fostering a culture of respect for human rights among its personnel.

“We are committed to upholding the rights of every citizen,” the spokesperson said.

The IGP has sought the cooperation of the public, particularly the media, in adhering to the directive. “Responsible reporting and adherence to ethical journalistic practices are vital in maintaining public trust and ensuring a fair and impartial justice system.” ACP Adejobi explained. 

“We urge the media to support our efforts in upholding these standards.”

The police force believes that this policy will help ensure that the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected throughout the legal process.
