Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has initiated the Ramadan Feeding Programme in Kano State, aimed at supporting the less privileged during the holy month.
The announcement coincided with the distribution of 1,250 cartons of dates donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim, flagged off the distribution at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.
He expressed gratitude to the Saudi Consul-General in Kano, His Excellency Khalil Ahmad Adamawi, for the generous donation, marking the fourth time the Kingdom has provided such assistance.
“This donation is particularly timely, as our administration is actively working to provide food assistance to the less privileged amidst the current economic challenges,” Governor Yusuf stated.
He highlighted Kano’s status as a peaceful state, attracting an influx of people and placing added pressure on government resources.
“This year’s Ramadan comes at a very difficult time, with Kano State as the only oasis of peace in Northern Nigeria. The resulting pressure on our resources is significant,” he noted.
Governor Yusuf appealed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for further support, requesting the construction of a psychiatric hospital and the renovation of a displaced children’s camp. He also reaffirmed the strong relationship between Kano State and the Kingdom.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, praised Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian efforts, while Consul-General Khalil Ahmad Adamawi reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to Kano State.
“We are committed to providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Kano State,” Consul-General Adamawi stated. “We also commend Governor Yusuf’s administration for its transformative projects.”
Cartons of dates were distributed to associations of persons with disabilities, Islamic clerics, and other vulnerable groups.
Governor Yusuf also called on the business community to reduce the prices of essential commodities during Ramadan.
He urged residents to support one another, especially the less privileged, and to dedicate themselves to worship and prayer.
“Let us support one another during this holy month,” Governor Yusuf urged. “Charitable feeding and peaceful coexistence are essential. We pray for continued blessings and prosperity for Kano State.”
