Kano Gov’t Affirms Legal Position in Emirship Dispute, Urges Calm After Court Ruling

The Kano State Government has moved to quell growing anxiety surrounding the ongoing emirship dispute, dismissing what it termed “misinterpretations and speculative reports” following a recent Court of Appeal ruling.

In a bid to set the record straight, the government has affirmed its legal position and urged residents to remain calm.

At a press briefing held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano on Saturday, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi addressed the swirling rumours head-on.

“There is no cause for alarm,” he declared. “The government’s stance remains firm, and we are confident in the legal process.”

The clarification comes after the Court of Appeal’s judgement on January 10, 2025, which upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, and overturned the Federal High Court’s ruling.

Barrister Dederi explained that Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, dissatisfied with the verdict, has pursued an appeal to the Supreme Court.

“It’s crucial to understand that the Court of Appeal’s judgement stands,” he emphasised. “It is valid and binding until the Supreme Court decides otherwise.

The recent stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal is a routine legal procedure, designed to maintain the status quo while the Supreme Court deliberates.”

He further stated that the government’s legal team has been instructed to meticulously examine the court proceedings and determine the next steps in accordance with the law.

“We understand the sensitivity of this matter,” Barrister Dederi added, “and we are committed to upholding the rule of law. We are confident that justice will prevail.”

The Attorney General, on behalf of the Governor, expressed gratitude to the people of Kano State for their “patience, understanding, and unwavering prayers for peace and progress in the state and the nation at large.”
