The Kano State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) held a capacity-building workshop for local journalists to enhance professionalism in reporting.
The workshop, which is part of the build-up to the SWAN 60th Anniversary, was confirmed on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, in a statement by the SWAN @60 Media and Publicity Committee.
Ibrahim-Abdullahi Waiya, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, opened the event and announced a โฆ1 million donation to the state chapter.
Commissioner Waiya praised SWAN for its commitment to professional growth and assured the association of the state governmentโs continued support.
He emphasised that the initiative aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusufโs vision to strengthen professional capacity.
โThe Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs has prioritised continuous training and retraining of media practitioners in line with the administrationโs commitment to improving communication and governance,” Waiya stated.
The donation is intended to support the chapter’s activities, including organising further workshops.
Zahraddeen Sale, Chairman of SWAN Kano, urged members to uphold the highest ethical standards in their reportage, noting that sports journalism plays a vital role in shaping public perception and encouraging youth participation.
The workshop featured presentations on crucial topics such as laws and ethics in modern journalism with a focus on sports reporting, rules and regulations on athletics, and laws of basketball.
Stakeholders, including Sharif Rabiu Inuwa Ahlan (NFF Technical Committee Chairman) and Ibrahim Umar Fagge (Acting Chairman, Kano Sports Commission), called for stronger collaboration between government institutions and media bodies to advance sports development in Kano.
