The Kwara State Government has commissioned the Zambufu and Otte/Budo-Egba Waterworks, marking another milestone in its drive to provide clean and reliable water supply across the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, announced the development on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, during a press briefing in Ilorin.
He also revealed that the state had paid โฆ700 million as counterpart funding for the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project to strengthen food and water security.
According to Lade, the Ministry has completed the Lafiagi and Zambufu Waterworks and commissioned three new power phases at Otte/Budo-Egba to enhance water production.
He added that rehabilitation work on the Omu-Aran and Oyun Waterworks is progressing and will soon be completed to restore supply to those communities.
โTo ensure efficiency, we are exploring alternative power sources to keep the waterworks running sustainably,โ Lade said.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the Oke-Ero Local Government Area has been officially declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the National Council on Sanitation and Task Group (NSTG)โan achievement that earned Kwara commendation from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
In support of the national campaign against open defecation, the state has built public lavatories in the Balogun Alanamu, Eruda, and Ajikobi communities within Ilorin, with similar facilities planned for other LGAs.
Meanwhile, Kwara is hosting a North-Central Zonal Meeting of general managers and representatives of rural water supply and sanitation agencies to develop strategies for eradicating open defecation across the region.
