A new chapter in Borno State’s sporting landscape was unveiled on Saturday as the maiden edition of the basketball competition commenced at the El-kanemi Warriors Sports Centre, Maiduguri.

The event is a collaborative effort between Area 10 Grinders Foundation, a basketball academy based in Abuja, and the Borno State Sports Council.

According to Umar Mohammed, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, the competition aims to reintroduce basketball to the youth of Borno State. “We believe that basketball can be a powerful tool for youth engagement and development,” Mohammed said.

“By showcasing the beauty and excitement of the game, we hope to inspire a new generation of basketball players.”

Mohammed, a former national basketball player, emphasised the importance of giving back to the sport. “It is our duty to nurture young talent and create opportunities for these aspiring athletes,” he added.

Ibrahim Mohammed, a coach with the Borno State Sports Council, welcomed the initiative. “This competition is a significant step forward for basketball in Borno State,” he said.

“We encourage all participants to showcase their skills and strive for excellence.”

A total of eight teams are vying for the championship title in the competition.
