A man has been sentenced to one year in prison for defrauding victims of N1.1 million in an employment scam, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced.

Justice Muhammad Maina of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, convicted and sentenced Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe on Wednesday, March 12th, 2025.

Omorogbe was arraigned by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on a single charge of criminal misappropriation.

“Omorogbe dishonestly misappropriated and converted to his own use the aggregate sum of N1,190,000.00, belonging to one Sarah Bulama, under the guise of securing employment for her sister and another person with the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition,” an EFCC spokesperson stated.

Omorogbe pleaded guilty to the charge. The prosecution requested the court to convict him accordingly, while the defense counsel asked for leniency.

Justice Maina sentenced Omorogbe to one year imprisonment with an option of a N200,000 fine.

“His journey to the Correctional Centre started when he fraudulently collected N1.1 million to secure employment for his victims with the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition and failed to secure the jobs for them,” the spokesperson explained. “He also did not return their money.”
