COAS Oluyede Extols Troops’ Commitment, Calls for Renewed Dedication
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Nigerian Army Medal, has commended officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army (NA) for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability.
Delivering a goodwill message as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, the COAS praised troops for their steadfast service in the face of ongoing national security challenges.
The message was conveyed during two key religious events held at the Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri: the NADCEL Juma’at Prayers on Friday, 27 June, and the Inter-Denominational Church Service on Sunday, 29 June.
Speaking on his behalf at the church service, Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, described the 162nd anniversary of the Nigerian Army as a symbolic milestone.

“We mark this milestone with profound joy and gratitude to God, who has over the years granted us victories in numerous battles and challenges,” the COAS stated in his message.
He highlighted the Nigerian Army’s contributions to global and regional peacekeeping efforts, its role as the backbone of national defence, and its ongoing support to civil authorities in maintaining law and order.
He urged all personnel to rally behind his leadership in line with the theme of this year’s celebration: “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive.”
“As we celebrate the NA at 162, let us be mindful that Nigerians look up to us to overcome the security challenges facing the nation. We must renew our commitment to safeguarding our people and our sovereignty,” he added.
The COAS paid tribute to fallen heroes and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to supporting their families.
He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strategic leadership and to the Governor of Borno State for his continued support to troops in the Northeast.
In his own remarks, Brigadier General Unachukwu urged troops under 7 Division to remain professional, respect constituted authority, and uphold the Army’s core values.
He emphasised the importance of fairness, sincerity, and prudence in both operational and administrative responsibilities.
At the Juma’at prayers, Colonel Aliyu Idris, Chief J1 of Headquarters Operation HADIN KAI, delivered the COAS’ message on his behalf.

The sermons by the Chief Imam and the Reverend Father at the respective religious gatherings emphasised service, troop welfare, and resilience in the face of adversity.
The religious events were attended by Theatre Commander Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar; senior officers; formation and unit commanders; NAOWA members; troops; their families; and worshippers from the host community.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Yake Jingina, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations 7 Division, Nigerian Army, on Monday, 30 June 2025.
