Popular TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya has been re-arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano for allegedly abusing and mutilating Nigerian Naira notes.
The arrest follows her breach of an administrative bail granted to her by the commission over a month ago.
Kunya’s re-arrest on Sunday, March 16, 2025, comes after she was initially apprehended in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the national currency.
Specifically, she is accused of “spraying Naira notes for fun” during her stay in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.
“The EFCC is committed to upholding the integrity of the Nigerian Naira,” stated a spokesperson for the Kano Zonal Directorate.
“Abuse and mutilation of our currency are serious offences, and we will not hesitate to take action against those who violate the law.”
After her initial arrest, Kunya was granted administrative bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano. However, she subsequently absconded, evading the legal process.
“After weeks of intensive investigation and surveillance, our operatives successfully re-arrested her,” the spokesperson confirmed.
“She is now in custody at our Kano Zonal Directorate, awaiting her arraignment.”
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the laws protecting the Nigerian currency, warning against any acts of abuse, including spraying, stamping, or mutilating the Naira during social events.
“We urge the public to respect the national currency and refrain from any actions that could damage its integrity,” the spokesperson emphasised.
“The EFCC will continue to pursue and prosecute those who violate these laws.”
