The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Minna Chapter, marked International Women’s Day with a strong call for accelerated action on gender equality and women’s rights.
The event, themed “Accelerate Action”, took place at the Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja Multipurpose Hall, TRADOC NA Officers’ Mess, Minna Military Cantonment.
The event aimed to break down gender barriers and promote women’s empowerment. Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander TRADOC, represented by Brigadier General Bede Amakor, emphasised the importance of recognising women’s contributions to society.
“While we’ve made progress, significant work remains in addressing issues like gender-based violence, discrimination, and reproductive rights,” Brigadier General Amakor stated.
This year’s focus included cancer awareness, with Major General Aligbe urging participants to utilise available medical check-ups and government initiatives.
“Cancer is a journey that requires compassion and support,” he noted.
He also acknowledged the resilience of military wives, particularly those with deployed spouses, and reiterated his commitment to improving their welfare.
“Your homes are vital places of peace and support,” he told the women.
Mrs Iyabode Victoria Aligbe, Coordinator of NAOWA Minna Chapter, reinforced the “Accelerate Action” theme, calling for continued efforts in education, leadership, and healthcare access for women.
“We must remain steadfast in our pursuit of equality,” she stated.
The event featured lectures, discussions, fitness activities, and medical outreach, inspiring participants to drive change within their communities. Attendees included members of TRADOC NA, 31 Artillery Brigade Minna, 313 Artillery Regiment Minna, NAOWA, NASWA, and NYSC.
The statement was released by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Training and Doctrine Command Nigerian Army.
