NBA Maiduguri Demands Total Motorcycle Ban in Civilian Areas

,

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Maiduguri Branch, has called for a complete ban on motorcycles within civilian areas of the state.

In a statement jointly signed by Chairman Zanna Hamza and Secretary Zakariya Muhammad Umar, the NBA expressed concerns over the current exemption granted to military, paramilitary, and civilian joint task force personnel.

While commending the efforts of the Borno State Government and security agencies in restoring peace, the NBA noted the recent ban on electric bikes, is concerned with the exclusion of other motorcycle users, particularly Civilian Joint Task Forces (Civilian JTF), some Military Personnel, and Paramilitary Groups who flagrantly continue to ride motorcycles in mufti and for personal use in civilian areas as against the purpose for the exemption.

The legal body warns that this inconsistency creates a security risk, as insurgents could potentially exploit the loophole by impersonating security personnel.

The NBA emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to security and urged the government to extend the ban to all motorcycles within civilian townships, allowing their use only for official security operations.

The association reiterated its commitment to working with authorities to protect the lives and property of citizens.

The NBA’s call comes amid ongoing security challenges in the region and serves as a reminder of the importance of a unified front against threats to peace and stability in Nigeria.
