Defending champions, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, overcame a late surge by Niger to claim their first victory in the WAFU B U17 AFCON qualifiers held in Ghana.
The Eagles emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win, propelling them to second place in Group B with four points. Burkina Faso currently leads the group after defeating Togo 2-0 earlier in the day.
Nigeria faced a setback when central defender Okorie Chibuike received a red card for a professional foul around the hour mark.
Despite playing a man down, the young Nigerians displayed resilience and held onto their lead secured in the first half.
The game saw Nigeria take the initiative against a defensive Niger side. Striker Rapha Adams capitalized on a loose ball in the Niger penalty area to poke home the opening goal. Niger nearly equalized just before halftime, but their attempt rattled off the post.
Both teams created opportunities throughout the match. Niger threatened early with a shot hitting the crossbar after just seven minutes. Nigeria also faced a substitution early on, replacing Boluwatife Ekishola due to injury within the first eleven minutes.
The Golden Eaglets had several chances to extend their lead but failed to convert. John Ogwuche and Daniel Arierhi were brought on in the second half to bolster the attack.
Nigeria successfully navigated the challenge of playing with ten men after Chibuike’s red card. Goalkeeper Chinedu Dominic made a crucial save on the resulting free kick, denying Niger an equalizer.
The victory puts the Golden Eaglets back on track after their opening day stalemate against Burkina Faso. They will play their final group match against already eliminated Togo on Wednesday.
