The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress warning, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C in several parts of the country.
Nimet issued the warning in a statement over its official X, formerly Twitter, handle on Monday.
NiMet forecasts maximum temperatures of 42°C in Kebbi, Jalingo, and Yola; 41°C in Lafia; and 40°C in Minna and Makurdi.
“Temperatures across the North will range from 36°C to 42°C, while the South will experience 34°C to 39°C,” NiMet stated.
High humidity levels are expected to increase discomfort.
The most affected areas include the North-Central and North-West (FCT, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Taraba, Zamfara), the South-East and South-South (Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers), and the South-West (Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Delta).
NiMet has issued advisories to mitigate the effects of the heat. “Drink plenty of water, avoid direct sun exposure, wear light clothing, and limit outdoor activities,” NiMet advised.
“Check on the elderly and children, who are particularly vulnerable.”
The agency urged the public to stay updated through their official website.
“Stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary precautions,” NiMet said.
