Northern CAN Reaffirms Support for New Leadership

The 19 Northern States chapters of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have publicly reaffirmed their support for the newly elected leadership, headed by Reverend Joseph Hayab, following a contentious election held on February 25th in Abuja.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, attended by state CAN chairmen, youth, and women leaders, Apostle Shina Ibiyemi, speaking on behalf of the Kwara State CAN chairman, stressed the necessity for a “smooth transition” to enable the association to effectively serve its mandate to Christians and Nigerians.

However, the transition has been marred by a dispute, with former leaders, whose tenure allegedly expired in May 2022, refusing to relinquish control.

This has led to accusations of “unconstitutional tenure elongation.”

“We are committed to a transparent and legitimate transition,” stated Apostle Ibiyemi. “It is crucial for the stability and effectiveness of CAN in Northern Nigeria.”

The newly elected officials, including Reverend Dr. Jonah Samson as Vice Chairman and Bishop Mohamed Naga as Secretary General, have outlined a four-point agenda focused on “dialogue, community development, justice, equality, and integrity in service.” They have pledged to “unite Christians in Northern Nigeria and defend their rights.”

Furthermore, they have called upon the former leaders to “apologise for their actions and hand over all properties and documents related to the association.”

While the national CAN body has yet to formally intervene, the new leadership expressed confidence that their legitimacy would be recognised once the facts are established.

“We are certain that when the national body examines the situation, they will recognise the clear mandate given to us by the Northern CAN community,” a spokesperson for the new leadership said.
