The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), NTA Damaturu Chapel, has strongly condemned the assault on its member, Baba Gana Kolo, by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Yobe State Government House, Yakubu Zakari Deba.
In a statement signed on November 6, 2025, by the Chapel’s Chairman, Aliyu Mohammed Babi, the NUJ described the attack as “a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence the press.”
According to the statement, Kolo – who covers the Yobe State House of Assembly for NTA Damaturu – was physically attacked by CSO Deba while performing his professional duties at the Assembly complex in Damaturu.
“This egregious act of violence is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society,” Babi said.
“We demand immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The union also called on the Yobe State Government to guarantee the safety of journalists and ensure an enabling environment for free and independent reporting.
NUJ urged the management of NTA Damaturu to provide medical and professional support to Kolo, assuring that it will “monitor the case closely to ensure justice is served.”
The statement was copied to the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, the Director of DSS, and the Commissioner for Information, among others.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation within the media community, reigniting calls for stronger protection of journalists in Nigeria.
