Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has sparked controversy by placing a ban on public gatherings and convoy movements, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to stifle celebrations planned for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return.
The announcement, made via a statement by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Femi Fanwo, cited security concerns.
“We have received credible intelligence about plans by some people to cause trouble, hiding under political and religious gatherings,” Fanwo stated.
The government’s directives include a blanket ban on all rallies and public gatherings, a restriction on security convoys entering the state without prior clearance, and the suspension of fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area following recent violence.
“This is not about politics; it’s about the safety of our people,” Fanwo insisted. However, many residents believe the timing of the ban is suspect, coinciding with Senator Natasha’s planned homecoming.
A resident, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “Everyone knows this is to stop Natasha’s supporters. They’re afraid of her popularity.”
The government has deployed security personnel across the state to enforce the ban and maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, Senator Natasha’s camp has yet to issue an official statement regarding the ban. The situation remains tense as residents await further developments.
