Two police officers were injured on Tuesday, October 29, 2025, after being ambushed by suspected herders while responding to a farmers–herders conflict in Kojoli village, Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe State.
This was disclosed in a statement by SP Dungus Abdulkarim, Police Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Command, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, personnel from 19 and 79 Police Mobile Force (PMF) units were deployed following a distress call that herders had invaded rice farms with cattle, destroying crops.
“On arrival at the scene, the officers came under heavy attack as the herders opened fire using AK-47 rifles, bows, and arrows before fleeing into the bush,” Abdulkarim said.
During the assault, two officers — Sgt Abdullahi Aminu and Cpl Aliyu Suleiman — were overpowered, disarmed, and sustained machete injuries on their heads, arms, and legs. They were later evacuated to General Hospital, Bara, for treatment.
Police recovered one rifle at the scene, though another service weapon was taken by the fleeing suspects.
A suspect identified as Mohammed Bello was arrested with a blood-stained cutlass and is currently assisting investigations.
A large number of cattle belonging to the attackers were also recovered and escorted back to Kojoli village by police and local vigilantes.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, condemned the attack and ordered the deployment of additional tactical units to prevent further violence.
“The Command will not tolerate violence, attacks on police personnel, destruction of farms, or criminal grazing. We are committed to peaceful coexistence and justice for all parties involved,” CP Ado said.
He urged farmers, herders, and community leaders to report disputes early and avoid taking laws into their hands, emphasising that “security is a shared responsibility and peace is possible through cooperation.”
