The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate has yet been released under the recent presidential prerogative of mercy, stating that the process is still undergoing final administrative review.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Fagbemi said the review is a standard legal procedure aimed at ensuring that all names and recommendations comply with established laws before the official release instruments are issued.
โThe process remains at the final administrative stage, which includes a standard review to ensure that all names and recommendations fully comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued,โ he said.
The minister explained that after the Council of Stateโs approval, a final verification of the list is conducted to correct any anomalies before forwarding the implementation instruments to the Controller-General of Corrections.
โThis stage affords an opportunity for a final look at the list for remedial purposes, if any, before the instrument is forwarded for necessary action,โ Fagbemi added.
He emphasised that the verification process is part of the governmentโs commitment to transparency, accountability, and due diligence, assuring Nigerians that the exercise is being handled strictly within the bounds of the law.
โThere is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the Presidentโs mercy,โ the statement said.
Fagbemi commended citizens for their vigilance and constructive feedback, describing public engagement as a vital component of democratic governance.
โThe rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness,โ he concluded.
