As the five-year term of Professor Aliyu Shugaba, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, came to an end, he officially handed over leadership to Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele on Monday, June 3rd, 2024.
 
Professor Mele, who previously served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Central Administration, will now assume the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor.
 
A special Senate meeting held at the university’s Senate Chamber marked the handover ceremony.

During the meeting, Professor Shugaba expressed his gratitude to the Senate, staff, and students for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.
 
Professor Mele, in his acceptance speech, commended Professor Shugaba’s leadership and administrative skills, crediting him for elevating the university’s standing. 
 
He appealed for continued cooperation from the university community and expressed his hope for lasting peace and progress at the institution.
