The House of Representatives has directed Multichoice to suspend its proposed 20-25% price increase pending an investigation by the House Committee on Information.
The decision followed an urgent Motion of Public Importance sponsored by Esosa Iyawe, a member from Edo State, who expressed concern over the public outcry triggered by the price hike.
“The recent price adjustments by Multichoice have sparked widespread frustration among subscribers, forcing many to discontinue their subscriptions,” Iyawe stated during the motion.
The House adopted the motion and mandated the Committee on Information to investigate the price hikes and ensure cost-effective policies in the pay-TV sector.
The committee is expected to report back within four weeks.
MultiChoice Nigeria, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, implemented the price adjustment on its subscription packages on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
This action occurred despite prior warnings from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) against arbitrary price increases.
