Safety of Journalists is not an option but our right – Comrade Dauda

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Borno State Council, Comrade Dauda Iliya has emphasized the importance of safeguarding journalists’ rights and ensuring their safety amidst increasing complex and dangerous reporting environments.

In a statement by (MACOSA) Secretary Unimaid, Rosemary Iyaji Olima to newsmen in Maiduguri at weekend.

Comrade Dauda affirmed this in an event organized by the Mass Communication Students’ Association (MACOSA), in collaboration with the Department of Mass Communication to mark this year’s  World Press Freedom Day held at the University of Maiduguri.

“His presence underscored the commitment of the NUJ to advocating for press freedom at both the local and national levels,”Comrade Dauda maintained.

A lectures was delivered by guest speaker of faculty member of the Mass Communication Department, Professor Abubakar Mu’azu, who shared insightful perspectives on the role of media in upholding press freedom and its implications for society which specifically address this year’s theme on the environmental crisis.

Prof Mu’azu provided invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing contemporary journalism in an environmental situations.

Similarly, HOD of Mass Communication Unimaid, Dr Abubakar Abdulmutalib was on a live radio program where he spoke on the significance of the World Press Freedom Day and delved into the evolving landscape of media freedom and explored strategies to overcome challenges to journalistic independence.

The event served as a platform for students, faculty, and industry professionals to exchange ideas, reflect on the state of press freedom, and reaffirm their dedication to upholding the principles of free and independent journalism by fostering dialogue and awareness.

It was gathered that the celebration aimed to underscore the significance of press freedom in fostering democratic societies and promoting accountability.
