The Senate has confirmed retired General Christopher Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence following a rigorous five-hour screening session focused on the nation’s security challenges.
The confirmation occurred on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu nominated the former general to replace Badaru Mohammed, who resigned on health grounds.
Lawmakers grilled the appointee regarding the controversial withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State.
The withdrawal reportedly occurred just before the November 17 abduction of schoolgirls, sparking national outrage.
Musa assured the Senate he would launch an immediate investigation into the Kebbi incident and the recent killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State.
“It is very unfortunate and really painful. I want to assure Nigerians that we will not stand by and have terrorists have the capacity to do such,” Musa said.
“We are going to go after them fully, working together with all the security agencies. We are going to investigate fully,” he added.
The new minister pledged to prioritise the protection of lives and territorial integrity upon assuming office.
